I just installed Windows 98 SE on an old Pentium 2 (333 MHz) with a NIC and a 56k V90 modem for a friend's kids for Christmas. The modem is installed and the NIC works on my cable, but I have a yellow question mark in Device Manager that says I'm missing something called a PCI Serial Controller. Looks as though it's probably a driver of some sort, but I've never heard of it. I've searched for a driver called that, and come up empty-handed. The mobo is an Intel 740 (i740), the modem an AOpen SVV, and the sound is onboard and working fine. Display drivers are in place and working fine.

The other thing to try is: start-settings, control panel-add new hardware, and let windows find the new hardware when it finds the the serial controller, you need to select, install drivers from a location, and then it will ask you where do I search from? I pulled the card and Googled the numbers to Zoltrix, the original manufacturer (before Conexant bought it), then found the dirvers I needed.

Went into Device Manager and removed both the modem and the persistent PCI Serial Controller error, then expanded the driver files to a hard drive folder and rebooted.
