This is the first volume of a three-volume work. The title Textbook of Elementary Physics given to it by the authors reflect their desire to present a textbook suitable for teaching the elements of physics as a science, a task that inevitably faces all physics teachers in secondary schools, whether general or technical.The work (which has had seven editions in Russian, the latest in 1970-1) is widely used in Soviet secondary schools and technical colleges, and is equally popular with pupils and teachers. The material is presented in clear, simple language with a wealth of illustrations, which makes it useful as a means of independent home study. Its merit is that it gives a basic explanation of the physical aspects of various processes in nature and technology, taking into account the latest advances in each field.This first volume is devoted to mechanics, heat and molecular physics.

This collection of 816 problems is based on the textbook 'Elementary Physics' edited by Academician G. For this reason the content and nature of the problems and their arrangement mainly conform with this textbook. There is no section devoted to 'Atomic Physics', however, since the exercises in Landsberg's book illustrate the relevant material in sufficient detail. Some problems on this subject have been included in other chapters. The problems, most of which are unique, require a fundamental knowledge of the basic laws of physics, and the ability to apply them in the most diverse conditions. A number of problems in the book have been revised from those used at the annual contests organized by the Physics faculty of the Moscow University. The solutions of all the difficult problems are given in great detail.
